Woodworth
House
832 W. Wayne Street, Fort Wayne, IN
This classic Italianate-style house was built
about 1869 for James Clinton Woodworth and Martha Woodworth. James was
born in Worchester, Massachusetts on May 10, 1839, and was educated in Worcester
and Boston. In 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army, becoming a first
lieutenant with Company H of the Twenty-fifth Massachusetts regiment. In 1863,
he was wounded in the arm in the battle of Cold Harbor, resulting in his
retiring from the service. He came to Fort Wayne at the invitation of his
uncle, Dr. Benjamin S. Woodworth, who also lived in the neighborhood.
On December 19, 1866 James married Martha Morris. Between the years of 1866 and
approximately 1872, James was a bookkeeper with Fort Wayne National Bank (which
later became Old National Bank). In approximately 1873, he became the
assistant cashier of the Fort Wayne National Bank, a position he held until the
time of his death. James, a member of First Presbyterian Church, “was quiet, of
a nature and disposition kindly and agreeable, and to know him was but to
respect and like him. He was precise and punctual in all matters of business and
was never known to court desire or notoriety or public notice.”
James and Martha had five children of which son John and daughter Theresa died
in infancy. Son Charles A., died at the age of 20 in 1893. James died at his
home of tuberculosis on January 18, 1900. He was survived by Martha, daughter
Alice Woodworth, and son Edward J. Woodworth.
